Our Focus

Today, our singular focus is to raise enough funds so that we can electrify the school and ship the computers.  We have collected over 120 computers now ready to be shipped.  However, without power in the school, the computers would not be put to good use.  So we are still continuing to ask our friends, families and everybody we know to help us reach that goal.

We believe that having access to the internet and online learning resources will help the students close the gap that exists right now.

Support Zorat

Thanks to our supporters, Zorat Elementary School is one step closer to getting electrified.  We have now raised $12,000 as of April 2013.  We feel blessed to have your support and we know you will take us all the way to $20,000.  Give the gift of education.

What have we accomplished since we started?

Since April of 2008, thanks to those of who have trusted us and generously donated your hard earned money, we have been very careful to keep our promise of 100% of your donations go directly to support the school.  We have 0% expense. We have put our own time and effort and we, (you and us) have already made an impact.  Here are some of the results:

  • Chairs and desks for over 400 students
  • 570 books for the library
  • Over 130 school uniforms for orphans
  • Soccer balls and jerseys for the school

A Little Bit Goes a Long Way

With the support of close family members and friends in our community, we have began to make a difference in the school. In 2008, 25% of all students were sitting on rocks. All students now have chairs and desk thanks to zorat.org supporters. In the same year, there were over 130 orphans or half orphans who needed assistance with school supplies and uniforms. We have done two rounds of uniform purchases. We have also furnished the library with chairs and tables, and purchased 570 relevant books for the library.  But this is only the beginning.

Recent Visit to Zorat

News Update - May 2, 2011

We recently visited Zorat Elementary, met with school officials, community leaders and government officials.  We have made significant progress towards the electrification of the school. The community at large has been mobilized to do everything they can to achieve this very important milestone.  Here are some of the commitments we have received from stakeholders:

  1. The president of the state of Tigrai, Mr. Abay Woldu Hagos met with us on Good Friday for a few minutes and has made the commitment that resources and funds would be mobilized to make sure that the electrification of the school would take place
  2. The department of education for the region where the school is zoned has committed that they would provide ten computers for the school - this is a good start and we would be going back to them to ask for more in due time.
  3. The community leaders have made the commitment to use assets that belong to the community to towards projects including electrification, construction of a building to be used as a new computer classroom and access road to the school.
  4. The community has also committed that any labor requirements would be fulfilled by members of the public whose children are going to Zorat Elementary School.
We at Zorat.org will continue to raise funds and will also begin to collect computers that can be cleaned, loaded with free educational software and shipped to the school in the next year or so.  We are excited and delighted that with your help, we are getting close to the ultimate goal of providing accelerated learning to the students as Zorat Elementary.
We would like to sincerely thank our family, friends and many people who have been friends of Zorat on more than one occasion to support us in this endeavour.

110 students were made very happy as they received their new uniforms.

Students and their parents as well as school and government officials attend the presentation event.  In addition to the new uniforms, the school library was presented with 570 books that will be used by the students at Zorat Elementary.  We were very excited to receive a phone call letting us know of the event which we have been waiting to take place with great anticipation.

Recently, a family donated $365.00 to Zorat.org.  This is the third time this family has done it.  We are so grateful for their continued support.  Thank you very much.  When ever we visit them around Halloween, they gave us their donation on a brown bag.  They save $1/day for the year just for zorat.  $1/day seems very small and easy to do but it goes a long way for our cause.

We hope there will be more people who can do the same as this family.

In three years, we have done several projects for the school. We have achieved our goal of having all students a chair and a desk, we have provided funding for uniforms for kids that are Orphaned and we have bought 570 books! Now the Tigrai government has promised us that they will electrify the school.

Our effort will now focus on finding computers loaded with free educational software that can be used by the students. We are looking at logisitics of how many and when we will begin to collect computers.  We look forward to your continued support.
