2010 will be a big milestone for Zorat Elementary School as we work hard to raise $20,000 so we can pull in electricity to the school.  Without power, the students will never have the opportunity to have access to computers and the internet.

We are counting on our supporters to make it happen.  We are campaigning for 300 donations worth $66.66 each over the next few months to reach our goal.

Thank you to our donors for your continued support!

Our long term Goal is $40,000.

Year to date $10,569.35 raised

whch is 26.42% of our goal!

A Library with a Handful of Books - Goes a Long Way

The school has a one room structure that has been designated as a library.  They have less than a few hundred books and most of them were donated from different sources. Unfortunately, the majority of the books in the library are far too advanced for the students to utilize.  We visited a bookstore that had hundreds of books that would be suitable to these students.  The books were mostly under $6.00.  It would be very easy to purchase books that are appropriate and cost effective at the same time.  In November 2009, Zorat.org sent enough money to purchase 570 books that are relevant to the students at Zorat. We will continue to look for funding to increase the number of books they have in the library.

Continuous Need for Basic Desks and Chairs

Although we have now provided 425 students with chairs and  desks to sit on, we will continue to monitor thier need for additional desks and chairs including maintenance and replacement. We would like to prevent students from going back to sitting on rocks.  Imagine a child sitting on a rock, doing school work on their lap.  It would surprise most people to find out that it costs around 62 Canadian dollars to purchase a combined desk that seats three students.

Zorat Elementary

In the Heart of Ethiopia

Zorat is located in Northern Ethiopia, in the province of Tigrai and near the historic town of Axum.  Zorat serves 1700 students that are from grade one to eight.  The student body represents 95% of all school age children in the surrounding area.

As of May 2008, nearly 25% of students did not have chairs or desks.  Thanks to the continued support of our donors and contributors, the mojority of those students now have chairs and desks. However, there are still several orphaned children who require support in on-going basis with school supplies, uniforms and books.

Students in Zorat Elementary school come from primarily farming parents.  Often times, children have to get back to work and support their families in their respective farms.  Most of their school work has to be completed before they go home. Frequently, students who take home any school work do not have the time or the light needed to finish their work in the evenings.
